A portrait is a painting, photograph or other artistic representation of a person.
They often capture the features of the sitter's head, with few artistic pretensions. The intention is to represent the person's physical appearance, and only sometimes attempt to represent his personality.
The art of the portrait flourished in Roman sculptures, where the sitters demanded realistic portraits, even if not in their favor. During the fourth century, the portrait gave ground to the idealization of the sitter's appearance. Just compare the portraits of Constantine the Great and Theodosius I. Reaparecienon realistic portraits in the High Middle Ages, in Burgundy and France.
In the West one of the most famous portraits is the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, which is in fact a portrait of an unknown woman.
